Dating Scan
Pregnancy Dating Scan – Kathmandu
A dating (viability) ultrasound confirms pregnancy details in the first trimester. Typically done between 6–12 weeks, it checks for a fetal heartbeat, number of embryos, and accurately estimates the due date. Lomash Health’s clinic provides early ultrasounds to reassure expectant mothers. Even at 6-7 weeks, we can detect the yolk sac and heartbeat via transabdominal or transvaginal scan.
What the Dating Scan Does
- Confirm viability: Detects the fetal heartbeat (usually by 6-7 weeks).
- Count fetuses: Checks if it’s a singleton or multiples.
- Gestational age: Measures crown-rump length (CRL) to estimate gestational age and due date.
- Check uterus: Ensures the pregnancy is in the uterus (rules out ectopic).
Booking and Preparation
Dating scans often require a full bladder for better imaging (drinking water 30–60 min prior). No fasting needed. The scan is quick (~10 min) and is done transabdominally or transvaginally if needed. Results are given immediately. If pregnancy is very early (<6 weeks), we may repeat scan later.
FAQs:
- When can I see the fetal heartbeat? As early as 6 weeks via ultrasound, heart motion is usually visible.
- Is transvaginal scan painful? It may feel a bit uncomfortable, but it provides clearer images in early pregnancy.
- What if I’m unsure of LMP? The dating scan will establish gestational age more accurately than dates alone.
